Eight workers were killed and several others injured in a major accident at the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant in Andhra Pradesh. The accident occurred due to a large amount of molten steel leaking from the SMS-2 and STC-3 heat facilities. According to reports, the accident occurred after a ladle exploded, causing the molten steel to spill out. Several workers were caught in the fire.

Police said the molten steel was at a peak temperature of approximately 1,600 degrees Celsius at the time of the accident. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the incident and directed all concerned departments to coordinate and expedite relief work.

Many workers are feared trapped

According to initial information, several workers present at the site were severely burned in the incident. Some workers are feared trapped inside the unit after the leak and subsequent fire. Fire and emergency service teams have arrived at the scene and are engaged in firefighting and rescue operations. The exact number of injured and trapped workers has not yet been officially confirmed.

Andhra Pradesh Home Minister Vangalapudi Anitha spoke to the Visakhapatnam District Collector and Police Commissioner over the phone to inquire about the incident. She directed officials to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured. She also directed that rescue and relief operations be expedited. According to the Home Minister’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Vangalapudi Anitha rushed to the accident site as soon as she learned of the incident. She is also in constant touch with officials and giving necessary instructions.
