President Droupadi Murmu will confer the Padma Awards for the year 2026 at the Civil Investiture Ceremony to be held at the Republic Pavilion of Rashtrapati Bhavan today. The ceremony will be held in two phases and will be attended by Vice President CP Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, several Union Ministers and dignitaries.

How many awards will the President give?

The President will present 66 Padma Awards at the first civilian investiture ceremony today. These include two Padma Vibhushan, six Padma Bhushan, and 58 Padma Shri awards. The remaining Padma Awards will be presented at a second ceremony to be held later.

Malyalam actor Mammootty

Veteran Malayalam actor Mammootty will be honoured with Padma Bhushan for his contribution in Indian cinema. During his career, he gave so many blockbuster movies in Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi. Previously, he was honoured with Padma Shree in 1998.

Alka Yagnik

Playback singer Alka Yagnik will be honoured with Padma Bhushan for her long standing singing contribution to Indian cinema and Indian music industry.

Late actor Satish Shah will be posthumously awarded the Padma Shri. Known for his impeccable comic timing, Satish Shah became a household name through TV shows like “Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai,” “Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi,” and “FIR.” He also starred in films like “Main Hoon Na,” “Hum Aapke Hain Koun…!” and “Mujhse Shaadi Karogi.”

Bengali superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee has been selected for the Padma Shri. One of the biggest stars of Bengali cinema, Prosenjit has appeared in over 350 films in a career spanning nearly five decades.

Why is the Padma Award given?

The Padma Awards are the second highest civilian honour in India, after the Bharat Ratna. These awards are given for outstanding and distinguished contributions in various fields, including the arts, social work, public service, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, and civil service.

The Padma Vibhushan is awarded for exceptional and distinguished service, the Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of a high order, and the Padma Shri for outstanding contributions in any field. These awards are announced annually on Republic Day.

The President has approved a total of 131 Padma Awards for the year 2026. These include five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan, and 113 Padma Shri awards. Special preparations have been made at the President’s office for the ceremony, and security arrangements have been tightened.
