The day after the results were announced in West Bengal on May 4th, Mamata Banerjee dismissed the entire electoral process and declared that she had not lost. She would not resign. Never before had a state head refused to resign after losing. The Governor invoked the special powers granted to her under sub-clause (b) of clause (2) of Article 174 of the Indian Constitution. With the dissolution of the Assembly, Mamata Banerjee’s 15-year rule in Bengal came to an end.

The order issued by Lok Bhavan stated that the current cabinet had lost moral ground after the election results, yet the Mamata Banerjee government did not resign. Given the constitutional situation, the Governor has decided to remove the Chief Minister and her Council of Ministers from office.

Earlier, there were reports that Mamata Banerjee might take the matter to the International Court of Justice. Expressing displeasure over the outcome, Mamata Banerjee had said that she would go to the International Court of Justice if necessary. She also stated that she would not resign even if President’s rule was imposed.

Result of West Bengal Election

In the state elections, the BJP won a landslide victory, winning 207 seats. The TMC won 80. Furthermore, the Congress won two seats and the Aam Janata Unnayan Party two. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav arrived in Kolkata this evening to meet Mamata Banerjee. Struggle on the streets of Bengal and what next?

As news of the Assembly’s dissolution spread, clashes erupted again in several areas of Bengal. A massive clash between BJP and TMC workers was reported in Shivpur, near Howrah. The question is: what will happen to Bengal now? Political experts say that until a new Chief Minister is sworn in, Governor R.N. Ravi will oversee the state’s affairs. This means that Bengal will now be ruled directly by the Raj Bhavan, and the police and administration will operate under the Governor’s instructions.
