The Indian Embassy in Kuwait said on Wednesday that an Indian national was killed in an attack by Iran targeting civilian facilities in Kuwait, including the Kuwait International Airport and diplomatic missions.
The embassy expressed its deepest condolences and said it is in contact with the bereaved family and is working closely with Kuwaiti authorities to provide all necessary assistance. The embassy did not disclose the identity of the deceased.
Kuwaiti authorities have confirmed that one person was killed in the attack, the first Indian death related to the latest escalation in the regional conflict between Iran, the US and Israel.
Airport attacked, flights disrupted
Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry said Iranian missile and drone attacks targeted civilian installations, including the country’s main international airport and diplomatic missions. The ministry condemned the attack but did not specify which diplomatic missions were damaged.
The pre-dawn attack caused extensive damage to Terminal 1 of Kuwait International Airport, injuring several people and disrupting air traffic, according to Kuwait’s state news agency. Authorities temporarily rerouted flights and suspended operations while conducting a security assessment.
Kuwait Airways later announced that Wednesday’s flights would be rescheduled. Civil aviation officials later said that operations from Terminal 4 had resumed after authorities assessed the damage and implemented necessary safety measures.
The attack marks a significant escalation of tensions for the oil-rich Gulf country, which had largely avoided direct hostilities since a ceasefire was declared in the Iran war on April 8.
Regional tensions deepened
Iran has fired missiles and drones at Kuwait and other Gulf countries as tensions rise in the region. Kuwait, a close US ally and host to American military personnel, has generally avoided becoming a direct target in the conflict.
The US military said that two Iranian missiles fired toward Kuwait either missed their targets or broke up mid-air. US Central Command also said that Iranian drones aimed at US forces stationed in Kuwait failed to reach their targets. Furthermore, Iranian ballistic missiles fired toward regional neighbors also failed to reach their targets.
Bahrain said its air defense system, working in conjunction with the US military, intercepted missiles and drones aimed at the island state, where the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet is headquartered.
