Former West Bengal minister and TMC leader Sujit Bose was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday in connection with the municipal recruitment scam. Sujit Bose arrived at the ED office with his son Samudra Bose around 10:30 a.m. He was questioned for about 10 hours and then arrested later that night.

Sujit Bose, who was the vice-president of the Dum Dum Municipality at the time, is accused of illegally recruiting approximately 150 people in the South Dum Dum Municipal Corporation between 2014 and 2018. It is alleged that Bose received money and flats in exchange for these appointments.

Sujit Bose, a three-time MLA from Bidhannagar, lost the recently held assembly elections to Sharadavat Mukherjee of the BJP by a margin of over 37,000 votes.

Minister Sujit: When did scam happen?

The municipal recruitment scam took place around 2014-2018, when jobs were given in exchange for money in various municipalities.

How it was revealed

The matter came to light during the investigation of the teacher recruitment scam in 2023, when the agency raided the premises of a person named Ayan Sil.

Agency finds evidence

The investigation found evidence of illegal appointments to the posts of clerks, sweepers and other posts in several municipalities, including South Dum Dum.

45 lakh rupees seized

The ED raided 13 locations, including Bose’s office, on October 10, 2025. 45 lakh rupees in cash was seized.

Questioned twice in 11 days, then arrested

Sujit Bose received several ED notices during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign. One of them was on April 6, the day his nomination papers were filed.

He had previously approached the Calcutta High Court, citing his busy election campaign schedule and seeking exemption from appearing before the ED. After the elections, Bose appeared before ED officials at the CGO Complex on May 1. Sujit was arrested 11 days later during his second appearance.

After the FIR was registered by the CBI on the instructions of the Calcutta High Court, the ED raided the premises of Sujit Bose on January 2, 2024 and October 2025.
