Tamilga Vetti Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay met with Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday to stake claim to form the government. His two-year-old party emerged as the single largest party in the recent assembly elections. In its debut election, TVK won 108 of the 234 assembly seats.

Tamil Nadu’s two major parties, the DMK and the AIADMK, won 59 and 47 seats, respectively. The AIADMK’s defeat resulted in the DMK’s ouster from power exactly five years later.
Earlier, Governor Arlekar had confirmed that he would meet with Vijay. Vijay had claimed he had the numbers to form a government. “I have received a letter from TVK. They will meet with me in the evening,” the governor told ANI.
He has said that he has the majority and should be called to form the government. Yes, I have given Vijay an appointment. Now a new government will be formed.

Congress supports TVK
After falling short of the majority mark of 118, the TVK had sought the support of the Congress to form a government. Earlier in the day, Tamil Nadu Congress president K. Selvaperuthagai and state in-charge Girish Chodankar met Vijay at the TVK headquarters in Chennai to confirm their support.

How will they bridge the gap?
Despite Congress support, Vijay’s TVK is five seats short of a majority of 118. TVK has also approached the AIADMK to bridge this gap. Congress contested the assembly elections in alliance with the DMK, while the AIADMK was the largest constituent of the NDA, which also included the BJP.
What will TVK Chief Vijay do now to get the majority?

DMK called the Congress move a betrayal of trust
The DMK criticized the Congress party after it announced its support for TVK. They described the move as lacking foresight and accused the party of betraying its indie alliance partners.
