Who is V.D. Satheesan?
V.D. Satheesan, whose full name is Vadasseri Damodaran Satheesan, was born on May 31, 1964, in Nettoor, Kochi, Kerala, to a Nair family. His father’s name is K. Damodara Menon and his mother’s name is V. Vilasini Amma. From the very beginning, his political roots were rooted in grassroots politics, rather than in the power circles of Delhi.
V.D. Satheesan has a strong educational background. He received his early education from Panangad High School, a popular school in the area. He then graduated from Sacred Heart College, Thevara. Satheesan earned a Master of Social Work degree from Rajagiri College of Social Sciences, Kochi.
He studied Law before entering in politics. He completed his degree of LLB from The Kerala Law Academy Law College and LLM from Trivuntapuram. His close friends called him ‘Bookworm’ as he has deeply interest in reading books.

Story of entering in politics
Entered in politics during student life
V.D. Satheesan’s political journey began during his education. He entered grassroots politics through the Kerala Students Union (KSU). During his student days, he became a vocal leader and was elected President of the Mahatma Gandhi University Union from 1986 to 1987. He also served as National Secretary of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress Party.
Worked in High Court over 10 years
Although he entered politics early, he pursued a career in law for a long time. A trained lawyer and active social activist, he practiced law in the Kerala High Court for nearly 10 years. During this time, he actively participated in the Youth Congress and gradually established himself as a fiery speaker and aggressive political organizer.
Entry into electoral politics during legal practice
His first foray into electoral politics came in 1996, when he contested the Paravur Assembly seat. The constituency was then a Communist Party stronghold, and he lost to CPI candidate P. Raju.
Despite this defeat, Satheesan refused to give up and remained active in the region. In 2001, he achieved his first major political success when he was elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly for the first time from the Paravur constituency. Interestingly, at the time of his first election in 2001, he was still practicing law in the Kerala High Court.
How he entered in politics with Congress?
After being elected as an MLA for the first time, V.D. Satheesan never looked back and, with his impeccable grassroots support and aggressive politics, catapulted himself to the top leadership of Kerala.
Made Paravur an invincible fort for Congress
V.D. Satheesan: After winning in 2001 from Paravur constituency, this place became his political laboratory and launchpad for politics. He was never defeated from this constituency from 2001 and has been elected as MLA from (2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, 2021 and 2026). He defeated prominent Left leaders like K.M. Dhinakaran in 2006, Panniyan Ravindran of the CPI(M) in 2011, and Sharada Mohan in 2016 by wide margins. His groundbreaking initiatives in his constituency, such as a massive drinking water project for millions of residents, strengthened his credibility beyond politics.

Rebellious voices identified within the party
When the UDF (Union Democratic Front) was in power in the state between 2011 and 2016, Satheesan was known as a rebellious voice within the party. He championed green politics and strongly opposed his own party leaders’ capitulation to influential community leaders. He consistently advocated for merit to be the criterion for distributing election tickets. He also served as the Chief Whip of the Indian National Congress during the 12th Legislative Assembly.
Became vocal voice of opposition during left rule
As a legislator, Satheesan led numerous debates in the House and established himself as a key opposition voice against the Left government, sharply questioning the development claims made during former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s rule. His aggressiveness often led to sharp attacks from Left supporters on social media.
2021 was the biggest turning point
V.D. Satheesan: The biggest breakthrough in his career came in 2021. Kerala’s politics has been characterized by a change of power every five years. However, in the 2021 elections, the Left Front defeated the UDF for the second consecutive time. Following this defeat, the Congress high command appointed Satheesan as the Leader of the Opposition in the 15th Assembly, replacing senior leader Ramesh Chennithala.
Since he had no prior ministerial experience, many considered the decision risky. However, over the next five years, he transformed himself into the leading alternative and most vociferous critic of the Vijayan government.
Now led the party to a historic victory and become a contender for the CM post
V.D. Satheesan: In the 2026 assembly elections, Satheesan led the entire campaign and publicly vowed to retire from politics if the Congress-led UDF alliance failed to win 100 of the 140 seats. His gamble paid off, and the UDF won a historic victory with 102 seats, while Satheesan himself secured his sixth victory in Paravur by a landslide margin of 20,600 votes.
Satishan, once considered a second-rung leader in the party, has today been named the Chief Minister of Kerala with the massive support of the UDF’s biggest ally, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and its workers.
