A power bank exploded on IndiGo flight 6E 108 from Hyderabad to Chandigarh on Tuesday, injuring five passengers. The power bank was in a passenger’s bag.
The incident occurred while the flight was parked at the airport. Following the accident, the plane filled with smoke, causing panic among passengers. All the passengers were evacuated.
Some photos have also been shared, showing a woman being placed in an ambulance. The crew immediately controlled the fire using fire safety equipment.
It is not yet clear how the power bank exploded. Police and airport authority teams are investigating.
Plane evacuated and passengers were taken to the terminal
In a statement issued by IndiGo, it said that for safety reasons, the aircraft was immediately evacuated and the relevant authorities were immediately informed. All passengers were safely transported to the terminal, where the airline’s team remained on scene to assist them.
According to the airline, necessary technical inspections will be conducted before the aircraft is returned to service. IndiGo said the safety of passengers and crew is its top priority.
198 passengers in flight
According to sources, IndiGo flight 6E-108 (HYD-IXC) landed safely at around 3:29 pm. The plane was carrying 198 passengers, two children, and six crew members. After landing, as the plane was approaching Way 1, a passenger sitting on seat 39C informed the crew that his power bank was on fire. It was suspected that the power bank had exploded.
The cabin crew immediately controlled the fire with a fire extinguisher, but smoke spread inside the aircraft. Emergency protocols were implemented as a precaution. At around 3:35 pm, a crew member opened the emergency exit and passengers were evacuated using inflatable slides. An Air Force fire tender team arrived at the scene at 3:38 pm, but by then the situation was completely under control.
