Eileen Wang, the former mayor of Arcadia, California, has pleaded guilty to illegally working for China. According to the US Justice Department, she ran pro-China propaganda at the behest of the Chinese government between 2020 and 2022.
Officials said Wang disseminated pro-China content without informing the US government. She ran a website called “US News Center,” which published pro-China news.
The investigation revealed that articles in favour of the Chinese government were also posted on the website, in which allegations of atrocities against Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang were termed false.
Wang, 58, resigned as mayor on Monday. She faces charges of acting as an agent of a foreign government, a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.
