Petroleum companies have increased the prices of petrol and diesel. The new rates came into effect from Friday. After the rate hike, petrol in the capital Jaipur now costs ₹107.97 per liter.

Meanwhile, in Sriganganagar, Bikaner, and Sawai Madhopur, the new price of petrol has reached ₹109.46 per liter. This is probably the highest in Rajasthan. Diesel here has also now cost ₹94.74 per liter.

It is believed that the rates have been increased due to the continuous increase in crude oil prices in the international market.

Increase of more than Rs 3 per liter

In Jaipur, the price of petrol has risen by approximately ₹3.25 per liter. Diesel prices have also risen by ₹3.20. This sudden price hike has raised concerns among the public, motorists, and businesses in the transport sector.

Experts say that if tensions in the Middle East continue for a long time, petrol and diesel prices may see further increases in the coming days.

Prices had not changed since 2024, there was a cut before the elections

Petrol and diesel prices in the country had remained stable since March 2024. Just before the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the government had provided relief to the public by reducing prices by ₹2 per liter.

Although fuel prices in India are technically regulated and companies can change rates every day based on the 15-day average price of international crude, they remained unchanged for a long time due to political sensitivities.

Prices in Delhi

In Delhi, petrol will now be available for ₹97.77 per liter. Diesel prices have risen to ₹90.67 per liter. The new prices came into effect on May 15th. This is the first price increase in nearly two years.

At the same time, companies are still incurring losses of ₹25-₹30 per liter on petrol and diesel. Along with petrol and diesel prices, CNG has also become more expensive by ₹2 per kg in major cities. In Delhi, a kilogram of CNG now costs ₹79.09.

Prices of other things may also increase

The rise in diesel prices directly impacts the common man’s pocket and kitchen by these three ways:

  • Freight charges will increase: Truck and tempo fares will increase, making vegetables, fruits, and rations imported from other states more expensive.
  • Farming costs: Farmers will have to spend more to operate tractors and pumping sets, which will increase the cost of grain.
  • Bus and auto fares: Public transport and school bus fares may also see an increase.

What is the reason behind this?

The main reason for this increase is the fluctuation in crude oil prices in the international market. Before the war between Iran and the United States, crude oil prices were $70 per barrel, which has now risen to over $100 per barrel.

Oil companies were under pressure due to the rising crude prices. Therefore, the companies have taken this step to cover their losses. If crude oil prices remain high for a long time, petrol and diesel prices may be increased further.

Prices have risen in neighboring countries first, now in India

The government has argued that the West Asian war has led to a surge in global oil prices. This has led to 15% to 20% increases in petrol and diesel prices in neighboring countries like Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, but Indian consumers have not been burdened by this.
