2025 visit was also considered special because it was the first time since Putin visited any country after Russia-Ukraine war. He last visited India in 2021.

India is hosting BRICS Summit

This year, India is chairing BRICS. BRICS is a group of the world’s major emerging economies, comprising India, Russia, China, Brazil, South Africa, and now includes new members such as Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, the UAE, and Indonesia. During India’s presidency, numerous meetings, ministerial conferences, and working group discussions are being held throughout the year in various cities across the country.

India has focused its presidency on strengthening the voice of developing countries in the Global South, a multipolar world order, economic cooperation, energy security, digital public infrastructure, counter-terrorism cooperation, and supply chain integration. India is trying to demonstrate that BRICS can become not just a political forum but also a major economic grouping linked to trade, investment, technology, and development.

Earlier this month, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also visited India. He participated in the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting. Issues such as tensions in West Asia, global security, reform of multilateral institutions, terrorism, and economic cooperation were discussed at the meeting. India also stated during the meeting that the world is changing rapidly, and cooperation among countries in the Global South has become even more important.

India’s presidency is considered crucial because the world is currently facing several major crises. Amid US-China competition, the Russia-Ukraine war, conflicts in West Asia, and global economic uncertainty, BRICS is attempting to position itself as an alternative platform to Western influence.

PM Modi will also visit Russia

Earlier, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who was visiting India, said on May 15 that they were preparing for PM Modi’s visit to Russia. He stated that Modi had confirmed his visit. He stated that the two countries continue to have strong cooperation in defense, energy, trade, and many other areas, and that Russia wants this partnership to continue to grow stronger.

His statement suggests Modi may visit Russia this year to attend the India-Russia annual summit. However, the official date or schedule of the visit has not yet been formally announced.

The annual India-Russia summit is usually held in October, November, or December. In recent years, it has mostly occurred in the latter months of the year. Therefore, it is believed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia and the summit may take place in the latter months of the year.

The India-Russia Annual Summit is typically held annually. It began in 2000. Since then, the leaders of the two countries have participated in the summit almost every year, alternating between India and Russia.

The summit features face-to-face talks between Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Putin, covering defence, energy, trade, nuclear cooperation, space, connectivity, and global issues.
